Archaeological site of Ek Balam, Yucatan. Black Jaguar

The Mayan archaeological site of Ek Balam is located about 12 miles/19 kms north of Valladolid. State of Yucatan.

Ek Balam dates from the Middle Preclassic (700-300 BC) to the Terminal Classic period (900-1100 AD)

Most of its constructions dates to the Late Classic period (600-900 CE).

Ek Balam was the capital of the Kingdom known as Talol.

This building known as the Acropolis contains numerous structures superimposed over each other in different construction phases, rooms, passageways, courtyards, temples and stairways along six levels.

On the fourth level there is a structure unique in the Maya world with intricately worked stucco  façade very well preserved.

Here is the tomb entrance of the king Ukit Kan Le'k Tok' on the Acropolis; it features a monster with sharp teeth and guarded by winged human creatures; some people say they are angels.

It has many other beautiful structures that can be visited and a defensive wall that surrounds part of the site entering by a beautiful arch.
