In Mexico the tipping culture is a rule, as the minimum wage in Mexico is so low, the people who work mainly offering services and tourism activities will complete their salaries with tips.
So, waiters, maids at hotels, guides, drivers, bellboys, porters, staff at gas stations, elderly or children who pack your stuff at the market, the guy that washes the car, the delivery boy, the street actor, everybody work on Tips.
So, how much to tip, here is a little guide:
Though tips are always voluntary and you are not forced to tip; if you received a very good service and you are pleased with it, this will guide you to know how much to tip in Mexican pesos if you want to leave a:
Small tip – a Good tip – or an Excellent tip
In restaurants and bars, between 10 % - 15 % - 20 % from the total of the bill
Bell boy or luggage porter at airport: $ 10 - $ 30 - $ 90
Maid at hotel per day: $ 20 - $ 50 - $ 100
Guide on a 1 Day tour: $ 500 - $ 900 - $ 1,700
Driver on a tour day: $ 200 - $ 350 - $ 500
Taxi on a single one way trip: $ 10 - $ 20 - $ 50
Guy that puts fuel to your car: $ 5 - $ 10 - $ 20
The person that packs your stuff at the supermarket : $ 5 - $ 10 - $ 20
The guy that washes the car: $ 10 - $ 20 - $ 30
Street actor or window washers at semaphores : $ 5 - $ 10 - $ 20
The pizza delivery guy: $ 20 - $ 40 - $ 70
Some restaurants or hotels include a suggested tip or service on the final bill, so check out carefully when you ask for the check, that the service or tip is or is not included.
