Magical Town of Valladolid, Mexico

The City of Valladolid is the 2nd most important city in the state of Yucatan and it was founded in the XVI century on top of an ancient Mayan settlement called Zaci.

It is in this city where the Caste War began, often known as the first spark of the Mexican Revolution of 1910.

Enjoy a typical Mexican town with its XVI century church in the main square along with the City hall and the market, be delighted with the colorful houses and their fine handcrafts made in the area.

Some years ago Valladolid was denominated “Magical Village” by the Mexican tourism board as it conserves the typical taste and architecture of the colonial times.

Visit the magnificent church of San Servacio in front of the central park. The original church built in the year 1545 was demolished in 1705 due to a murder called “The crime of the mayors”.

The church was rebuilt with a different orientation.

Next to the church there is the City hall which in the 2^nd floor you can see 4 murals that tell the history of the region.

15 minutes walking from the center of the city, you can find the ancient Franciscan convent of San Bernardino de Siena founded in 1552 where tha main altarpiece was worked in wood painted in gold. It houses a museum that keeps beautiful pieces of Sacred art and some remains of the War of Castes.

The main square is the heart of the town where locals and tourists hang around  to enjoy the evenings and perfect to try the regional snacks like Marquesitas, a local street snack, also known as “Mayan crepes”, a Cotton candy or a Corn with cheese and chile, the Mexican style.
