Sacred Cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula

65 million years ago in the Cenozoic era, the peninsula of Yucatan was under the ocean; during the last Ice age the sea level went down discovering the biggest limestone platform in the world.

Cenotes were formed when acidic rainwater dissolves the porous limestone bedrock giving shape to beautiful geologic formations as stalactites, stalagmites and columns.

Within time along the ages these process forms the longest underground rivers in the world, some with more than 300 kms in underground flooded passages, a real paradise for cave divers.

The Cenotes are the entrances to the depths of the earth and water, to Xibalba, sacred place for the Mayas. Inside the Cenotes they have found several traces of altars, pottery and sumptuary artifacts.

At the same time Cenotes also provide of fresh water to the population as there are no rivers on the surface at all.
