Mayan Archaeological site of Palenque, Mexico

Palenque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most beautiful cities of the ancient Mayas.

It is situated in a hilly área of Chiapas in the middle of the jungle where streams and waterfalls run throughout the site. The original Maya name was Lakam’ha which meaning ” Place of many Waters”. 

Palenque’s settlement dates back to the Middle Preclassic period  between the years 600-300 BC reaching its peak around the 3rd and  7th century. Was finally abandones around the 12th century.

The site contains over 200 architectural structures  within an area of over 2.5 square km.

One of the main monuments of Palenque is the beautifly decorated tomb of the king Pakal discovered in 1952 deep inside the Temple of the Inscriptions by the mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz.
