In Mexico you have it all, from street markets to the most luxurious boutiques, it all depends on what you are looking for, and how much you want to spend.
If you want to buy souvenirs to bring home with you, go to the “Mercado de Artesanias” handcraft markets, if there is a city market is cheaper than the ones in the touristic zones, but in both of them, you will find lots of handcrafts and nice stuff.
Also at the archaeological sites and touristic spots, you will certainly find lots of things.
Be ready to bargain. Generally at markets and with street vendors, the price is often negotiable, so don’t be shy to bargain and from the first price they offer to you for certain item, don´t show yourself too interested and kind of offer some 30 % under the price they say; and from there you can negotiate the right price for both. If you get a 20 – 30 % discount from the original price, then I say you did well.
Now, also use your sensitiveness; if you see that the person who is selling you something is a native with evident necessity, follow your heart and if you think you would pay that price in your own country for something like that, then pay the price he or she asks for.
In regular shops or other providers, if the items have the price written on, they you must consider they are fixed prices. If things have not their prices, then you can think they are negotiables.
