We have all heard the media just spreading bad news about the drug cartels and things like that, but frankly the problematic areas are very specific mainly in the border states and some parts of some few other states.
The truth is that Mexico is in the top 7 most visited countries in the world with more than 35 million foreign visitors every year. And more than 2 million american citizens have chosen Mexico as their place to live!
So it is extremely rare crimes involving tourists.
Just act as if you were in any big city in the world:
Don’t go out and show off your money.
Don´t wear excessive jewelry at the sight of everybody (avoid the temptation of robbers).
Be vigilant when you use ATM´s
If you have a safe at your hotel or can leave locked your valuables and passport, is advisable.
In Mexico you don´t need to be carrying your passport wherever you go, a copy or a photo of it in your cell phone will be enough.
Don´t carry your wallet or cell phone at the back pocket of your pants. Try to have your values under zippers or buttons, in front pockets better.
Ladies: a small purse with strong stripes, and have it crossed in front of you.
If a possible robber see you are well aware of your stuff and those around you, he will certainly look after someone else.
Places in Mexico to avoid according to the department of state of the US
Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas
So, by just avoiding these particular places and having a common sense while traveling will be enough to be hazle-free.
