Magical Town of de Bacalar, Mexico; and its 7 Colors lagoon

Bacalar is a so called Magical Town, this is a denomination given by the Mexican Tourism Board to some few Mexican towns that have significant cultural richness, natural beauty, historical relevance, unique traditions, architecture and some other characteristics.

It is located on the south of the state of Quintana Roo, about 4 hours from Cancun. It is at the shores of the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar, also called “the 7 Colors lagoon” for its 7 shades of blue, from turquoise at the shallow shores to dark, shadowy blue in the middle.

It is mainly fed by underground rivers.

In the past, it was a prehispanic Mayan settlement and later became an important spot for trading the Ink tree, also called the Log tree (very much desired by the English to dye their clothes) along with precious woods which worth it high prices.

In the center of the town, you can see the Fort of San Felipe built by the Spanish in 1733 to defend the town and its population form English pirates and smugglers.

Now it hosts the Pirate museum where you can learn about this epic period and history of this region.

Now at Bacalar there are no big resorts but mainly small hotels and comfortable bungalows in a very Caribbean atmosphere. You can swim in the lagoon, take a boat tour or maybe do some kayaking.

Bacalar lagoon is also known for its stromatolites, these are living rock-like formations composed of colonies of microorganisms that are the the oldest forms of life on Earth, having produced the oxygen that made the planet habitable.
