Mayan Archaeological site of Uxmal, Yucatan

Uxmal is a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The Mayan name of Uxmal means “The 3 times built”.

Uxmal was stablished during the VI century AD in the Classical period of the Mayan civilization.

Uxmal is the most important representative of the architecture known as Puuc, often also called the Mayan Baroque because all the magnificent carvings, hieroglyphics and masks decorating enormous Palaces and Temples.

Uxmal was one of the most important cities of the Puuc region during 500 years until it was finally abandoned during the XIII century.

During the Spanish occupation of Mexico in the XVI century it was rediscovered by fray Diego de Landa but left abandoned until the XIX century where explorers started new studies of the place.
